Could your child benefit from seeing a children’s therapist?

Helping kids feel safe, supported, and understood

When a child is struggling with big feelings, tricky behaviour, or changes in their world, it can be hard to know what’s “just a phase” and what needs more support. You might feel like you’re walking on eggshells, or like nothing you try is making a difference. Maybe school’s mentioned something, or your child’s withdrawn and won’t say why.

Whatever’s going on, counselling offers a calm, consistent space where your child can feel heard, and where we can work as a team to support their wellbeing.

Children’s counselling services

Worry and anxiety

Big feelings that seem hard to manage

Grief and loss

Friendship or social difficulties

We support children with a wide range of emotional and behavioural concerns, including:

School avoidance

Anger or meltdowns

Changes at home or in routines

Feeling different or misunderstood

Every child is different, so sessions are centred around meeting them where they are. For some kids, that could be a quiet conversation, for others it might involve drawing, games, or tools that help them express what’s going on inside.

What to expect

Sessions typically run for 50 minutes. Depending on your child’s age and preferences, we might talk, play, draw, or use simple tools to explore what’s going on. Everything is paced to help them feel safe and in control.

Some children want their caregiver in the room for the first few minutes; others prefer space right away. We’ll talk with you about what feels right.

While the focus is on your child, your insight and support can be an important part of the process.

Our approach, pluralistic counselling

There’s no one-size-fits-all way to support someone, so we don’t believe in making the client fit into a particular method of therapy. Instead, we use pluralistic counselling, which involves finding the right tools for each client, based on what works best for them. That might mean blending approaches, trying a few things, or adjusting the pace to suit the child’s needs.

We’ll also check in with you (the parent or caregiver) to share ideas, answer questions, or just talk through what you're noticing, while always keeping your child’s autonomy at the centre.

Sessions might include:

  • Narrative therapy to help them tell their story in their own way

  • CBT techniques to build awareness around thoughts, feelings, and actions

  • ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) to support emotional flexibility

  • Te Whare Tapa Whā to recognise all aspects of wellbeing

  • Strategies to support emotional regulation and social connection
